You are spoze to build up your defense against each wave of dinosaur, with theriz and alpha being the 2nd to the last wave. There is a progression (that is broken by modders and unofficial rate reapers) to the game. They drop decent loot and give you a reason that is not related to instanced boss fights to play the game. On beginner servers alphas are the most useful of all dinos.
